First Year
Subject 101. The Foundations of TCM
This course enables students to develop general foundations of TCM. The basic characteristics of TCM and its systematic structure, the physiological functions of the organs, the relationship among the organs and other structures and its connection with TCM diagnosis will be discussed.
This course also provides students with the knowledge of basic theory of TCM, including the theory of yin and yang, the five elements, the theory of zang and fu organs, the theory of qi, blood, and body fluids, etiology, pathogenesis, the prevention, and treatment in TCM.
Subject 102. Diagnosis of TCM
This course provides the students with the basic diagnostic components in TCM. It includes four diagnostic methods of TCM, and application of various TCM differentiation methods and writing TCM case records. The basic skills of observation, auscultation, consultation and palpation will be introduced.
Subject 105. Chinese Herbology
This course provides students with the fundamental theory of TCM herbology. It covers the property, applications and the identification of approximately 300 kinds of Chinese herbs most commonly used.
Subject 121. Anatomy and Physiology (1)
This course provides students with gross anatomy through discussing each individual system and the basic functions of important organs. This course also introduces students the physiology of cell and blood, and different systems such as circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, etc.
Subject 122. Anatomy and Physiology (2)
A Continuation of Subject 121. Anatomy and Physiology (1), this course provides students with gross anatomy and physiology of different systems.
Subject 131. Chinese Language and History of TCM
This course introduces students the Chinese language (Mandarin) with a focus on Pin yin, basic character recognition and writing, and basic oral Chinese language. There will also be some TCM terms and a brief history of TCM.
Subject 132. TCM Regulation, Ethics, and Communication Skills
This course provides students with the regulations of acupuncture and TCM in Canada with a focus on those in Alberta and British Columbia. This course also introduces students the ethics of practicing acupuncture and TCM, as well as the communication skills necessary among TCM doctors, patients and other health care professionals.
Subject 141. Clinical Observation and Herbal Lab (1)
This course provides students with the opportunity to be familiar with the clinical practice of senior TCM students, acupuncturists and TCM doctors with the focus of observation. This course also introduces students the administration aspect of running a clinic, which will help to build up the foundation for further clinical practice.
Subject 142. Clinical Observation and Herbal Lab (2)
This course provides students with the opportunity to be familiar with the clinical practice of senior TCM students, Acupuncturists and TCM doctors with a focus of observation. This course also focuses on acupuncture procedure, herbal recognition and preparation, administration in a TCM clinic, as well as communication between TCM doctors and patients.
Second year
Subject 203. Chinese Herbal Formulas
This course introduces students to the principle of forming formulas, the significance and rules of compatibility, composition, and the administration aspect of formulas. This course also focuses on the actions and indications of approximately 200 commonly used formulas and their modifications. This course is the foundation for clinical practices.
Subject 204. Internal Medicine (1)
This course provides students with an introduction to TCM internal medicine with a focus on etiology, symptoms, and the key points of treatments for internal diseases. Detailed discussion of exterior syndromes, syndromes of the lung system, syndromes of the heart and brain systems, and syndromes of the spleen and stomach systems will be covered.
Subject 205. Internal Medicine (2)
A continuation of Subject 204 Internal Medicine (1). This course provides students with detailed discussion of syndromes of the liver and gallbladder systems, syndromes of the kidney and urinary bladder systems, syndromes related to qi, blood and body fluids, and syndromes related to the meridians, collaterals and extremities.
Subject 206. Chinese (Tuina) Massage (1)
This course introduces students the principles of Tuina massage, basic techniques,? indications and contraindications of Tuina massage. This course also covers surface anatomy, TCM diagnosis and Western Medicine diagnosis. Specific Tuina techniques on different regions of the body will be discussed thoroughly.
Subject 207. Chinese (Tuina) Massage (2)
A continuation of Subject 206.Tuina Massage (1). This course provides students with knowledge of Tuina massage in various clinical situations. The diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the neck, back, upper and lower extremities will be discussed with the focus on Tuina massage. This course also introduces students Tuina massage techniques used for common internal disorders.
Subject 208. TCM Gynecology
This course introduces students to the characteristics of female physiology, the etiology and pathogenesis of female diseases, and diagnosis and treatment for diseases in female. This course also provides students with the knowledge of the five major groups of female diseases; diseases of the menses, diseases of leukorrhea, diseases during pregnancy, postpartum diseases and miscellaneous diseases.
Subject 209. Chinese Patent Medicine
Chinese patent medicine, a very important component in Chinese herbology has its unique characteristics. This course introduces students the commonly used Chinese patent medicine with a focus on actions, indications, contraindications and differentiation.
Subject 210. Dietary Therapy in TCM
Dietary therapy is one of the five components of TCM. This course introduces students to food and nutrition with TCM perspectives. This course also provides students with a detailed discussion on the role of diet and nutrition to maintain a healthy condition of and the prevention of diseases.
Subject 221. Pathology and Microbiology (1)
This course introduces students to the pathology and microbiology of western medicine. The concept of disease, pathology of cells and tissues, edema, shock, fever and tumours will be discussed.
Subject 222. Pathology and Microbiology (2)
A continuation of Subject 221 Pathology and microbiology (1). This course provides students with the pathology of the different systems, common infectious diseases and relevant microbiology information.
Subject 223. Western Medical Diagnosis
This course introduces students to the diagnostic methods of western medicine. It includes how to write the case record, conduct physical examination and analyse lab tests.
Subject 241. Clinical Practicum (1)
This course provides students with an opportunity to practice Chinese herbs under intensive supervision. The focus of this course is to introduce students to the procedure of TCM clinical practice, including the ability to write case record, conduct consultation and physical examination, and perform treatment. Routine discussion of cases will help student be familiar with the clinical procedure and help to build up the confidence for working in a clinical situation.
Subject 242. Clinical Practicum (2)
This course provides students with an opportunity to practice Chinese herbs under supervision. This course will continuously help students build up their clinical skills.
Third year
Subject 303. TCM External Medicine and Dermatology
This course provides students with the basic information of western medicine and a more comprehensive TCM knowledge for external medicine and dermatology. The skills required for the diagnosis, differentiation and treatment of dermatological and external conditions will be discussed. Both internal and external applications of Chinese herbal medications will be discussed along with the necessary acupuncture techniques.
Subject 304. TCM Sports Medicine
TCM has a long history of diagnosing and treating sport injuries, and it is still widely used in China. This course provides students with the information of diagnosis and the treatment of common diseases from trauma, including a general introduction, dislocations, fracture, and injuries of different body region. The role of TCM in sports medicine will be emphasized.
Subject 305. Case Studies
This course provides students with a working knowledge of managing the uncommon and difficult situations in clinic with a focus on herbology, Tuina massage, qi gong and dietary therapies. Relevant western medical information will be discussed as well.
Subject 306. Botanical Pharmacology
This course provides students with modern herbal pharmacological information. The newly published research paper on Chinese herbology will be introduced to ensure students have the up to date information of Chinese herbal pharmacology.
Subject 307. TCM ENT and Pediatrics
ENT refers to ear, nose and throat, or five senses in TCM. This course provides students with the knowledge of etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of the common disorders of five senses and pediatrics.
Subject 308. TCM Classics (1)
Shang Han Lun was written by Zhang Zhongjing in the third century. It is one of the most important ancient classics of TCM. Zhang Zhongjing was the first TCM Doctor in the history of TCM to advocate the theory of the six meridians and to apply the theory to the analyses and classification of the exogenous diseases. Many formulas and differentiation methods in this book is still widely applied in clinic situations now. The main goal of this course is to provide students with detailed knowledge of this classic.
Subject 309. TCM Classics (2)
This course provides students with a detailed discussion of Jin Gui Yao Lue. Jin Gui Yao Lue is the earliest clinical handbook of TCM. It outlines the pathogenesis, diagnosis, differentiations and treatments of a number of syndromes, many of which are identified by the herbal formulas that treat them. A large number of these formulas and names of syndromes are still utilized today.
Subject 310. Business Management
This course provides students with the information on business management for a TCM clinic and other TCM related businesses. Structural, legal, marketing, accounting and other business related issues of TCM will be discussed.
Subject 321. Western Pharmacology
This course provides students with an introduction to western pharmacology. The indications, contraindications and side effects of commonly used western drugs will be discussed.
Subject 341. Clinical Practicum (3)
A continuation of Subject 241. clinical practicum (2). This course provides students with the opportunity to deal with clinical situations under supervision and helps to build confidence. Routine discussion on clinical situations will help students to broaden their clinical experience.
Subject 342. Clinical Practicum (4)
A continuation of Subject 341.clinical practicum (3). This course provides students with the opportunity to deal with clinical situations under supervision and helps to build confidence. Routine discussion on clinical situations will help students to broaden their clinical experience.
